A Brooklyn intersection was the scene of yet another pedestrian accident recently when an elderly woman in the crosswalk was struck by a Cadillac Escalade. The victim was transported to Lutheran Hospital in critical condition and was not anticipated to survive.
Third Most Dangerous Intersection in Brooklyn
A federal study declared the Bay Ridge intersection of 82nd Street and Fourth Avenue , where the accident occurred, to be the third most dangerous in Brooklyn. There have been numerous pedestrian accidents along Fourth Avenue this year.
Witnesses noted that the victim was in the crosswalk. State law gives precedence to pedestrians over motor vehicles when both of them have the right of way.
One neighbourhood resident said that she had seen the Escalade speeding along local streets and had almost been hit by the vehicle herself. The driver of the Escalade remained at the scene and police are investigating. Preliminary law enforcement reports suggest that they do not plan to bring charges against the driver because no obvious traffic laws had been broken.
"Improvements" Planned to Street to Improve Safety
The accident occurred in an area slated for significant changes, although whether the changes will be improvements is controversial. The proposal would remove a driving lane in either direction between Ovington Avenue and 84thStreet. It would create an elevated island on the south side of the intersection. The plan received mixed reviews when it was unveiled to the public in March.
