Fatal Car Accident Kills Two in the Bronx

caraccidentparamedics.jpg

Two people were killed this past Saturday morning on the Hutchinson River Parkway in the Bronx.  The three-vehicle car accident happened around 7 AM, killing the driver of the Lincoln Town Car and his passenger, at 54-year-old man from Larchmont.

A northbound Ford Explorer struck the median, sending it into the southbound lanes.  The Town Car and a third vehicle, another SUV, hit the Explorer as they were traveling south.

The drivers and passengers in the two SUVs were taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.  The two adults and a 15-year-old boy were listed in stable condition and are expected to survive.

The accident happened very quickly, the vehicles traveling southbound were unable to avoid the Explorer as it came over the median. The damage to the Town Car was extensive.  One witness said, There was nothing left of it.”

There have been no arrests or citations issued as of Saturday evening, according to police.  The crash is still under investigation.

According to witnesses, the Explorer flew over the median and came down on top of the Town Car, crashing the roof and the people inside,

It is not known whether speed or alcohol caused the driver of the Explorer to hit the median.  However, witnesses suggested that the driver must have been speeding in order to fly over the median, rather than just crashing into it.

The safety and capacity of the Hutchinson River Parkway have been a contentious issue since the highway was opened in 1924 and many car accidents have been atrributed to the fact that the Hutchinson was designed and bilt in an era when far fewer cars were on the roads..  Efforts to reduce curves and roadway gradients over the years have only been partly successful.
